What do we know about Sam Kutesa

Ministry of foreign affairs headquaters

Kuteesa is an MP and Foreign Minister. He and Museveni were DP youth wingers and were in FRONASA in the seventies, and Kuteesa retreated to DP and Museveni proceeded to UPM and found themselves in NRM.

However some people dispute about Hon. Kuteesa being a FRONASA. They say that he was  connected to the Amin Regime in the 1971-73 period and that he played a leading role  in supporting the Amin regime to consolidate the revolution against what he termed as the remnants of UPC tyranny. Some of the statements of Sam Kuteesa as the Chairman of Mitchel Hall are in the Newspapers of the 1971-72 period and thus his true position at the time can be verified.  There is a lot of un-verified but very credible information of State contacts between the Makerere students who supported Elly Karuhanga against Tumusiime Mutebile and the students who supported Amin against the 1972 guerillas from Tanzania. Hon. Sam Kuteesa falls in this category.

Meanwhile, Paulo Muwanga, Lutakome Kayiira, Evaristo Nyanzi, Anthony Wagaba Sekweyama, Maj. Fred Mpiso, are among the first people charged with treason under NRM government. They were however acquitted after a year.Nyanzi was a guest of honour at a DP Mobilisers anniversary at DP headquarters in 1991, he was too personal against Museveni. Nyanzi ended up in a federal rebel group under a then Mengo minister Duncan Kafeero, was charged with treason against, applied for amnesty and was pardoned. He is keeping a low profile, and very elderly.

  1. BABALANDA,

Kuteesa is responsible for the NRM split in Sembabule

  2. WB Kyijomanyi,

Ugandans misunderstand Minister Kutesa, but he is a nice and kind man. That is all I will say. Ok, he is a DP man at heart.

Minister Kutesa is genuinely nice. He is a good man who never forgot his DP roots.
He was also a rich man way before YKM. You may not know it, but Mr Kutesa fled into exile during Amin’ s time to Nairobi where he worked for a company associated with the Kenyatta family.

It is true that he is close to the first family by virtue of double marriages which exposes him to problems. But would Mr Kutesa steal openly the way Mbabazi did with Temangalo/NSSF money? No. Would Minister Kutesa steal the way Col Mugenyi is doing? No. Did YKM/NRM make Mr Kutesa who he is today? No.

    To hell with spy nonsense.

    WBK,

As you said, Mr Kutesa is a generally nice gentleman. He wil not mind me telling you this: I couple of years ago, John Nagenda and Kutesa invited me and an American lady journalist to Kampala club where they have their evenings. He then went on to tell stories I had myself only heard and did not believe to be true.

He said he, Dr Henry Obonyo and a couple of DP guys who were in the Military Council cabinet, were responsible for kicking out Paulo Muwanga and replacing him with Abraham Waliggo as Executive Prime Minister. Their intention was to fight both Muwanga and Olara Otunnu, he said. Apparently the Bazilio and Otunnu plan was to squeeze out Muwanga and replace Muwanga with Otunnu. Gen. Lutwa was to be forced to resign later with full honours and Otunnu would become President thereafter and work to stabilise the new government.

Kutesa said ‘Otunnu did not know what hit him’. He said it was one of the best strategies DP deployed at the time. Again it was him telling us and I don’t know if that was really what they plotted within that short-lived government.

    WBK
I dont know about Mr.Kutesa being a ‘genuinely nice’ man, but i would really love to meet this guy one day. By the way, Mr.Kutesa is a member of UAH as far as i know, and we would love it if he spares some time for Ugandans abroad. Is he naturally a quiet man? Could you also tell us more about Colonel Mugyenyi and his business dealings? Is he a genuine business man or crook? How powerful is colonel Mugyenyi Visa Vi statehouse connections?

    Thank you

    Abbey

  5. john Nsubuga,

  6. WB Kyijomanyi,

    Mr Kademeri:

But I read somewhere that Kampala club is being sold or was sold. Big mistake. That goes to show how far the greed has gone.

The police and prison mess sold to Chinese restaurants!

  7. billie kadameri,

    WBK,

I think you meant Uganda Club. Kampala Club, located off Sezibwa Road is a private ‘members only’ club. I think it was not sold.

Uganda Club is located next to Nommo Gallery and I think it is now part of State House.

  8. Mr Semuwemba:

I met, you know student excitement Mr Kutesa in 1980 and during the ‘peace talks’ in Nairobi in 1985. But yes he is generally a quiet man. That is his nature. I have heard from many DP people in Uganda that Mr Kutesa is still a good person. The media and Ugandans simply misunderstand him or engage in transferance-transfer their problems with NRM /YKM to Mr Kutesa. They think he is rich because of NRM or connections to NRM. No.

I do not know this Col Mugenyi fellow but he is crude. He is worse than Haji Basajjabalaba. And yes,he wears his state house connections everywhere. Forgive me-I know it has class connotation-but Mr Kutesa is a gentleman, which Col Mugenyi is not. Col Mugenyi went after markets and has now gone after roads with the support of Seya.

He has messed up procument of roads, he always complains when he doesn’t get the contract and asks for technical reviews when he makes even arithmetic errors in his bids. He thinks he has a right to get every contract

  10. ish,

people, don’t decieve yourselves about Kuteesa looking like a nice man….. this is a suprise to here anyone say such BS. Many of us new Kuteesa before NRM as a broke ass…. truth be told. And all gossip aside, you have no idea the wealth he has accumulated from Uganda’s tx payer money. Actually it is so much that that the US goverment had to close one US a/c belongign to him and repatriated the money back to UG on grounds that they could not establish were he was getting the money from. $20 is not small change!

  11. bridget,
