THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TRIBALISM

1.THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TRIBALISM: ‘Most people, left on their own, have simple tribal hearts….. Lions, buffaloes, elephants and birds hang out with and look out for their own. If you want to see the wrath of a baboon, knock one as you drive through Busitema. Hit a dog and no baboon will notice!’-Beti Olive Kamya, then MP, Lubaga North and a member of UAH

2.Thursday, 6 March 2008.Parliament met at 2.33 p.m. in Parliament House, Kampala .:
MS KAMYA: ”One honourable Karimojong promised to -(Laughter)- I am saying it in good faith. What is wrong with being an honourable Karimojong? I think it is perfectly honourable to be an honourable Karimojong as it is honourable to be an honourable Muganda. There is no problem –

THE SPEAKER: Hon. Kamya, you should refer to a Member or constituency so and so or by name, rather than his tribe.

MS KAMYA: Thank you, Mr Speaker. Okay,……………….

”I do remember that session in Parliament and I was completely taken aback when MPs laughed and the Hon Member from Karamoja took offense because (i) sitting together on the agricultural committee, we had developed a fairly codial and easy relationship, we joked and teased each other on Karamoja and Buganda, so my statement was made in that spirit – in reference to his threat on the floor of parliament that the people of K’ja were going to take certain action against something that displeased them.

I have often been teased by friends on account of Baganda (perceived?) dishonesty and slyness, I have been teased by Catholic friends on Protestants(I subscribe to Church of Uganda denomination) (perceived?) dishonesty, and I have often been teased about the Kikuyus (my Mother is a kikuyu) (perceived?) love of money over anything else – but I always take the jokes in the spirit in which they are delivered. My statement in parliament was really meant to be a light note, don’ read more than that it in.”

  1. eroti,

FROM STATE OF LADO , WE DO AGREE WITH MR ABBEY , THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TRBALISM .

    TRIBALISM AND NATIONALISM

If one talks of destroying Tribe or Tribalism , then the very person lacks that bit of a Political notion at all —- because there is No difference between Tribe and Nation Affairs in Politics .

Both Tribe and Nation have tendencies towards sectarianism with bearings inflicting conflicts between groups . For sectarianism as a characteristic of sects .

Sectarianism , according to one definition , is bigotry , discrimination or hatred arising from attaching importance to perceived differences between subdivisions within a group, such as between different denominations of a religion , class , regional or factions of a political movement.

The ideological underpinnings of attitudes and behaviours labelled as sectarian are extraordinarily varied. Members of a religious or political group may believe that their own salvation , or the success of their particular objectives , requires aggressively seeking converts from other groups ; adherents of a given faction may believe that for the achievement of their own political or religious project their internal opponents must be converted or purged .

Sometimes a group that is under economic or political pressure will kill or attack members of another group which it regards as responsible for its own decline. It may also more rigidly define the definition of ” orthodox ” belief within its particular group or organisation, and expel or excommunicate those who do not support this newfound clarified definition of political or religious ” orthodoxy ” .

In other cases , dissenters from this orthodoxy will secede from the orthodox organisation and proclaim themselves as practitioners of a reformed belief system , or holders of a perceived former orthodoxy . At other times , sectarianism may be the expression of a group’s nationalistic or cultural ambitions, or exploited by demagogues .

All along here is being defined the phrase “sectarian conflict” which usually refers to violent conflict along religious or political lines such as the conflicts between Nationalists and Unionists in Northern Ireland ( religious and class-divisions may play major roles as well ) . It may also refer to general philosophical , political disparity between different schools of thought such as that between Shia and Sunni Muslims . Non-sectarians espouse that free association and tolerance of different beliefs are the cornerstone to successful peaceful human interaction . They espouse political and religious pluralism .

Reference Particularly to Tribe / Tribalism :

Tribe, a concept that has endeared itself to Western scholars and journalists for a century , is primarily a means to reduce for readers the complexity of the non-Western societies of Africa , Asia , Latin America and the American plains . It is no accident that the contemporary uses of the term tribe were developed during the 19th-century rise of evolutionary and racist theories to designate alien non-white peoples as inferior or less civilized and as having not yet evolved from a simpler, primal state . The uses and definitions of ‘ tribe ‘ in the sociological and anthropological literature are varied and conflicting .

To an extent some Academic authors attach Tribe to the meaning of common language , common
culture , some ancestral lineages , and others to represent common governments or rulers .

NATION / Nationalism as such :

Yet a nation we all know may refer to a community of people who share a common language, culture, ethnicity, descent, or history . In this definition , a nation has no physical borders . However, it can also refer to people who share a common territory and government ( for example the inhabitants of a Sovereign state ) irrespective of their ethnic make-ups .

Etymology of the Term Nation :

The word nation came to English from the Old French word nacion, which in turn originates from the Latin word natio ( nātĭō ) literally meaning ” that which has been born “.

As an example of how the word natio was employed in classical Latin , the following quote from Cicero’s Philippics Against Mark Antony in 44 BC contrasts the external , inferior nationes ( ” races of people ” ) with the Roman civitas ( “community ” ) .

In conclusion , one can not yell day in and day out that killing tribalism is a better thing to impose Nationalism for the people to live better . The Mother Nature created you to be who you are and live in harmorny with your likes . Period !

THE REVISED VERSION STATED ON LONDONEVENING POST :

I think the whole Geopolitical ” Sudan Central Africa ” Region indeed needs Poltical re -assesement / Organisation based on the Peoples wishes still in Africa for the Future youn Generations onto come . The role of the Peoples Indentity has to come into light to avoid the Colonial Boundries drawn which merely was and still to divide the different Peoples of Africa based on the Arguments of Tribalism and Nationalism . Yet we all know there is No damn difference between the two words : one beginning with letter ” T ” while the other with ” N ” as we see it here :
